On the importance of backups

A couple days ago, a borked config file led me to believe that I had completely hosed my OpenACS setup. I ened up re-installing openacs and the database schema. Luckily, I backed up the templates and some scripts I had customized, so as I get sections of my install backonline I'm mostly able to do it quickly.

ObjCBrowser

Fascinating new development environment for building Objective-C Cocoa apps, called ObjCBrowser, based on a SmallTalk IDE. By Joe Osborn. (Thanks Mike!)

MacCVSClient

A very much improved MacCVSClient, v1.8, is released. (MacCVSClient has been around so long it has a 68k version. Wow. smile)

Happy Birthday dear Jodi...

Happy birthday to you!!!!!

Akwa IRC client

Seeing as I'm hanging out in #openacs a lot these days, I wanted a better IRC client than Snak. Snak's ok and all, but it's Carbon and it shows. I found a new client that seems to be very much a Cocoa app, with most of the features you expect from an IRC client: Akwa.

Where do you want to go today?

Anywhere.

Happy Birthday to Jodi, Early

Well, after a month of planning behind her back, I managed to pull off a (very nearly heart-stopping) surprise party for Jodi last night. Tomorrow is her actual birthday, but I had to do it early to get the most people here and to make sure she did not make other plans. With the collusion of a few friends in our church, I handed out invitations, arranged for a large cake, balloons, streamers, 30 guests, snacks, ice cream...

Bah!

Heh. This is what I need.

Jade Rubick's OpenACS "notebook"

Jade Rubick hosts a page of links to OpenACS tips. Excellent.

Convenient debug variable handling

While hanging in #openacs tonight I got a quick tutorial from jim (no link) on handling debug variables with an in-memory table structure. Read about it starting here. Combined with a new form of fusion... I mean, combined with a <multiple> tag in the adp page it makes it easy to output a table of debug data.

OpenACS Notebook

I've started a new section on this site called Notebook. This is where I'll collect posts on interesting topics. My first notebook page is the OpenACS Notebook, where I'm collecting weblog posts, tips, tricks, and other useful information.

Restart AOLServer/OpenACS after moving or changing XQLs.

Anytime you move or change an XQL file that lives in the www folder, you're going to have to restart the server, so that the package manager can reload the XQL.

OpenACS.org forum post on <include> behavior

I posted a message on the OpenACS forums regarding the behavior of the lookup code for <include> src attributes. So far there have been a few interesting responses.
