.NET on OS X
Halcyon Software is bringing .NET to Mac OS X. They are actually converting Microsoft's Intermediate Language (like Java's bytecodes) to Java .class files or source code, and will be providing the complete ASP.NET (including ADO.NET and WebForms) later this year.
" Halcyon is currently working with selected customers on deploying ASP.NET projects to the OS X environment. It expects to move into a formal Beta in October 2001." Cooool.
ST:Enterprise Launch date...
Wednesday, Sept 26! As Jim would say, "Drool factor 5!!!"
Last yard servers coming to OS X
Memora is bringing last-yard type personal servers to Mac OS X. Interesting.
Better Performance on OS X 10.1
Mac OS X 10.1 debuts at Macworld Expo today. From MacNN:
* Jobs launched Internet Explorer in OS X 10.1, and it took only one bounce to appear on the screen. He also showed the resizing and minimizing were enhanced dramatically in terms of performance.
New Client Page
This is the layout for you, Mr. Client.
Hand in my pocket
But whose is it? Doc Searls with more of his usual piercing analysis.
Roadtrip!
Jodi and I have decided to take a week-long roadtrip next week (actually starting this friday evening) to Niagara Falls, NY, and Toronto, Ontario. We're getting tips on seeing Canada from my only Canadian friend, Jim. (Thanks Jim!)
Brent on ST:Enterprise
Brent Simmons posts his thoughts on Star Trek series V - Enterprise. He's coming from the same angle I am. I'm so excited about this, I'm working on reviving an old tradition among my friends of getting together weekly to watch Star Trek.
Jabber to the rescue
Jabber is rocking our office world right now. We downloaded the server, and got one up and running (in short order really) on a local Linux box.
Leonardonics
One Man's jargonfile: Leonardonics, a glossary of micro-cultural references.
If you don't know the Jargon File...
Then you must know the Jargon File.
You'll have to forgive me...
Reading an anthropological exposition of someone's micro-culture always puts me in a strange mood.
More personal Jargon
Wittenspeak:
"OPP n.
Other People's Perl, which is generally unreadable and thus should be avoided at all costs. Example: "I'm not down with OPP."
Recent personal example: trying to understand the inner werkings of Bugzilla.
Moving Jo to Mozilla?
I'm downloading Mozilla onto my wife's Powerbook G3. She's been using Netscape 4.7, and I'm just hoping that Moz plays nice with her preferences. After browsing on her machine for a while I forgot how badly NS 4.7 renders some sites.
The Amazing Spider-Man
It's not fair... They give us an Amazing, fantastic, preview... and the movie doesn't come out until May 2002!!! Argh!
Use Cases
I'm working on a project where I've been introduced for the first time to the "proper" methods of software design, and am being chained (well, ok, metaphorically) to my desk to write Use Case Scenarios. I have to tell you, there are few tasks more boring than writing Use Case Scenarios. <yawn>. The fact that i got up at 5:30 this a.m. and was in the office at 6:45 a.m. does not help.
What did you think of "A.I"?
If you've seen Kubrick/Speilberg's "A.I.", I'd be interested in what you thought of it.
Donald Norman: The Perils of Home Theater
Don Norman, user experience guru, has written a fantastic article on what's wrong with home theater (meaning home entertainment). Don is the author of "The Design Of Everyday Things".
Cocoa Starting Point
These are some of the most useful sources for resources related to Cocoa development on Stepwise. Stepwise is definitely the first place to go for a wide variety of Mac OS X development resources.
Ooops.
Jim has a little accident involving 'rm -fr'. Oouuch.
