Every once in a while, you really need a hex editor. HexEdit seems to be the only freebie I've found for OS X.

Ok, I've kept quiet about this so far, becuase it's been blogged to death elsewhere. But I'm having fun playing with my $500 fantasy dollars and 1000 shares of monkinetic stock over at BlogShares.com.

Jason Kottke compares the unix philosophy and the Microsoft one:> If Unix development philosophy is small pieces loosely joined, Microsoft's philosophy is big chunks tightly coupled. Jason uses three words to describe how Microsoft keeps its developers: Friction, Inertia, and Marketing. FIM. I'm not saying that Microsft does not make some amazing products (not including Windows, at least to-date) but that (and this is from experience) it's an uphill battle to mix unix- and Windows-based applications in an environment, because the design philosophies are so different.

This guy spells out how to enable Rendezvous support for unix services, webservers, etc. Niiice.

Dave is doing a keynote at the Open Source Content Management conference (OSCOM) in Cambridge.

I recently gave a friend a resume to pass along for a linux sys admin position. It was a strange experience, thinking of myself as a systems administrator. But as I went through to tweak my resumee for the position, I realized that I've done quite a bit of it over the years (as any web developer must).

I've added a list of essays I've written on this site on thee right-hand side below the channel list, under "My Writings". Maybe someone will find it interesting.

I think someone was in way too much of a rush to get this story online. The entire text of the story (it's not long) is included twice!

I love looking at this blog, written in right-to-left persian script. I love that OS X renders it perfectly.

Big surprise, I hacked on mygannt.py some more this weekend, and it's now called sgannt.py. Ostensibly for Simple Gannt (though it's not so simple anymore) but more because it sounds cool to pronounce it "scant". -)

Spec Web Site Design: Design for a local lawn care company. The company has no site currently. In my design I tried to develop a look that was professional yet friendly.

Of course, no journey would be complete without a few choice temptations along the way.
